The aim of root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment) is to save a tooth that has been badly damaged. When the damage reaches the pulp (the space
inside the tooth containing nerves and blood supply) inflammation and infection occurs.
Inflammation and infection can be caused by:
- Decay or a deep cavity in a tooth
- A crack or a chip in the tooth
- Extreme wear
- Trauma
Symptoms of inflammation and infection may include pain, sensitivity to heat or cold, tooth discolouration and swelling or soreness in the gum surrounding the tooth.
